In all fairness, I never did like that guys garage much either... but I didn't call the city to have it removed.

What really kicks me in the pants about it though, is that he waited weeks and weeks, until I had completely finished putting up my fence... when it was done, tools put away and all... to call the city and complain.

All he had to do was come over and talk with me about it, it was my very first fence and things like "covenants" or "permits" hadn't even crossed my mind back then.

Happy It Happened...

It pains me to admit it, but looking back, "Jethro" (I call him that because he still reminds me of Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillys™) turning in my criminal fence was a good thing because the whole affair made me look more carefully at city ordinances.

Plus, it was the "Great Fence Fiasco" (that's what my wife and I call it...) that caused me to get serious about how to build fences and start building them for extra cash on the side... a LOT of extra cash actually.

And, I can build some really, really, nice fences now.

Thanks "Jethro!"... Uhm, kinda.

Looking back, I really could have used a good resource to help me build that first fence.

Like you... I'm pretty good with my hands and can do most handyman projects like;

• Building decks
• Building storage sheds
• Designing and building play houses
• Creating cool gazebo's
• Making wood toys
• Making storage crates and boxes
• Building all kinds of shelves, etc.

Back to what I was saying before... building that first fence especially, wasn't something I should have done without at least a little preparation, guidance and research.

Like you'll soon find out... there's a lot more that goes into building a fence than you might think right now - I know it was an eye-opening experience for me the first time.

You Want To Avoid
Making My Mistakes...

There are four important areas you want focus on, so you have a successful fence building experience and to make sure you avoid making the same mistakes I made.

Your four main areas to focus on are:

1. Planning: Be prepared ahead of time, before you put up your first fence post. There is a right way and the long way to build fences... personally, I recommend the right way.

2. Tools: There are roughly two dozen tools you'll need to build your fences. Tools like; chalk-line powder, circular saw, shovel and post hole digger, tape measure, wheelbarrow, a good pair of work gloves, etc.
   
   There's a complete list inside so you don't forget anything or waste your time trying to create a list from scratch. You definitely want start with the right tools so you don't have to stop, go get the tools you forgot, and start over again! That gets old real fast, I know because I've done it so many times myself.
   
   I finally put my checklist together so I wouldn't forget again and I give it to you so you won't need to learn the hard way, like I did.
   
   
3. Time: Here are some great tips for planning, coordinating your time and getting the most out of the time you have available to build your fence. I share more inside my book and these are a good start for you...

   • Don’t plan to take off work weeks in advance. If the weather is bad you’ll have wasted your time off and you won't be able to work on your fence. Weather can be a big problem - don't be too rigid when setting your schedules - be flexible and always plan ahead for possible weather challenges... you'll be much happier.
   
   
   • If you are not used to doing physical labor because, like me, you've been sitting at a desk for eight hours a day... take it easy when you get started. You don’t want to go twelve hours straight and then have to take the next four days off recovering! You'll get used to the physical part of building fences pretty quickly and, if you are like me, you'll actually look forward to working outside with your hands again once you get used to it.
   
   
   • Set a reasonable time frame to complete your fence. How big is your fence? What kind of fence are you building? What is the weather like? Do you have helpers? By the time you finish reading "Fence Building Secrets! Build a Perfect Fence Fast," you'll know what to look for and how to plan your schedule.
   
   There are a few more things to consider when it comes to building your fences and scheduling your time of course, but we go over these in detail inside.
   

4. Confidence: After you build your first fence, you'll be much more confident. Talking to others about building a fence for them, if that is your goal, will also be much easier. Of course, there are many different types of fences you'll want to get familiar with building and we cover those inside together as well.

Wrought iron fences are becoming less popular with the instability of iron prices. It is unfortunate because they are so amazingly beautiful. It's difficult not to appreciate how wonderful a wrought iron fence or railing looks.

You can purchase a genuine wrought iron fence if your budget allows or you can purchase fencing materials that look like wrought iron and have the same appeal, but cost a lot less!

  Split Rail Fences

Split rail fences have been around longer than just about any other kind of fence. They started as a way for settlers and pioneers to show the boundaries for their land.

As these settlers cleared their fields to get ready to start farming they used the trees they removed for: building homes, firewood, and split rail fences.

Today, split rail fences are not used so much for the purposes they were originally intended. These fences are interesting and unique and it's not uncommon to see people incorporate them into their homes outdoor landscaping for decoration or as a surrounding for their property.

  Farming Fences

Farming fences are practical, sturdy, easy to build and maintain and generally designed with the intent of keeping the animals either in or out. Although usually a big project initially, farm fences are easier to put up and the most practical design option.

  Sound Barrier Fences

The purpose of a sound barrier fence is to, well, reduce the sound, especially if your property is near a busy road or highway.

This type of fence is often put up by cities and municipalities. They are bigger, bulkier, and require a bit more detail than other fences.

Once you have your fence style picked out, it's time to get started building your new fence!

What about getting some help from friends and family?

My experience with getting help from close friends or relatives is that they are not very reliable. Still, if you can at least recruit them to help you put the posts in, usually the hardest task, and if you can get them to show up, you'll be well ahead of the game.

Just as important as getting help... is having the correct tools, which I briefly mentioned earlier.

Inside you get a list of everything you need, already put together for you so you don't have to do any thinking. Just grab your book, go down the checklists and you are already more prepared than 98.9% of others who are building their own fence.

Everything, from your tools list to your first aid kit, your electrical sources (for your saws and drills..) to drinking water, especially if it's a hot summer day!

Building Materials

When it comes to purchasing the materials there are places you can go locally and - did you know you can get what you need drop shipped directly to your project? This is an ideal solution if you don't have access to a large truck or can't get affordable delivery from a local lumber yard.

The Checklist

Over the years, I’ve heard some funny stories from people who forgot the most basic things when they started to build their fence. Guess what people forget the most? Nails and screws. I still find that amusing... nails and screws, wow.

Good thing you have the checklist inside now, it would be both, frustrating and embarrassing, forgetting something as basic as the nails and screws.

Being organized and prepared definitely helps things go more smoothly.

Your Mindset?

Let’s face it... you don't have to be a "woo-woo guru" to understand that the way you think about things effects how you deal with them, agreed?

It does take a certain mindset to start, and finish, building a fence. Even procrastination is largely the result of how you view things - how you think about them.

We'll touch on this more inside, for now its important to understand that building your fence requires commitmenton your part, not only financially and physically - but most important of all, that agreement with yourself to follow through and finish once you've started.

Safety

Safety seems to be the LAST thing anyone thinks about until they get a splinter or smack a finger with a hammer. I've learned over the years that having a well stocked first aid kit is important for any project.

What do you need in your First Aid Kit? I cover everything inside so you don't forget the important items - especially those most commonly used, for things like:

Slivers * Minor cuts * Bug bites * Bruises * Headaches and aching muscles

So don’t be too proud to have a first aid kit close by and handy. It will help keep your schedule on track, especially for those minor inconveniences that sometimes happen (i.e. I HATE mosquito's).

Getting Help Building Your Fence

Earlier I had mentioned that you shouldn'tt count on help always arriving just because you plan on them showing up. I give you some great advice to help you get folks to show up when you need them and places you can find help you may not have thought about before.

You can build your fence without any help, however - having help isn't a bad thing, right? We cover this in more detail inside.

A Realistic Schedule

Very few people have the ability to work on a fence every day until it is done. Depending on your life style, it is probably unrealistic to think that you can put in three hours working on your fence every night when you get home from work.

It is important to come up with a workable schedule that is flexible but, doesn'tt let procrastination sneak in and mess things up either.

One other factor affecting your schedule planning is the size of the fence you are building. If you have an acre to fence, that's substantially different than if you are just putting up a backyard privacy fence to go around a quarter acre lot.

Do you have help? What if they don't show up? How will your schedule be affected if the weather is bad or you get rained out the week you've scheduled to take off work and build your fence?

Strong Promotions

When it comes to promoting your side business, think outside the box. Here are some of my favorite promotions:

• Volunteer at Habitat for Humanity - the referrals and connections are invaluable.
• Remember people’s names! You'd be amazed at how this effects people.
• Do some “gorilla marketing” like using lawn signs with your name and phone number on them (don't spend too much money here - they're removed or stolen all the time!).
• Put up a simple website - did you know that the majority of people do their research on the internet before they make a major purchase now? Times change fast, don't they?

There are many more recommendations inside, but these get you starting strong.

Quality Agreements and Contracts

Labor Only Contract: Use this contract when the home owner purchases all of the supplies for putting up the fence and you bring the skills, tools and labor necessary. You'll learn about deposits, payment schedules, final payments, warranties, etc. inside - but you ALWAYS want to use a written agreement (I give you resources to get you started).

Labor And Materials Contract: Your business will be a bit more involved if you decide to run it as a contractor -- purchasing the materials and doing the labor. You’ll want to check and see if you need any special licensing for your state/area.

1. Get lien waivers. Lien waivers show that materials and labor are paid for in full.
   
2. Make sure that you define who will be doing the survey or getting the permit for the fence, before you get started.
   
3. Get everything in writing from the customer - always.
   
4. Make sure that you include a clause that discusses overages (going over budget). We go over what this is and how to properly phrase it inside.

You want to learn as much as possible about building your fence or starting a small business, if that's your goal. 1. Go to lumber yards and home improvement stores and look at the materials for building fences.
   
2. Drive around your area and observe how different styles of fences look in structure, straightness, the style and type, and their overall appearance.

4. If you have friends or family with fences, ask them if you can inspect them. You can learn from the obvious mistakes made when the fence was built and see the things that were done correctly. Storage Sheds, Work Sheds and Playhouses: I don't do as many of these as I used to, the cost of lumber has gone up too much and not everyone has the room or the need for a playhouse or shed. Still... these are great income generators and learning how to put them up quickly can add a very nice paycheck to an otherwise average project.

Toys, Wooden Crates, Boxes and Shelves: Great for those extra scraps of wood and building supplies you have left over after a project... these are the fastest, easiest extra money you can make on top of your fence building projects or you can create these as bonuses/gifts for your best clients who LOVE them and tell everyone how great you are!

(*NOTE: Like the Tree Houses, making toys wasn't planned. One weekend I was rained out from my scheduled fence building project, I knew that the client had children and I wanted to do something to let him know it was ok and I was reliable for the reschedule.

So, as I was cleaning up my garage, where I keep my tools and extra supplies, I got the idea to make his kids a couple of simple toys, like you see above. Not only was he relieved to see me knocking on his door, but he and his wife asked if I could make additional toys for gifts that they wanted to take to a friend in a couple of weeks!

I made an extra $40 that weekend, just messing around... so, I've been the town Toy-Maker ever since as well as the Tree House Man. It's a lot of fun, and good profit as well.)
